Naples & the Amalfi Coast

They say “vedi Napoli e poi muori”. It literally means see Naples and then die, but the sentiment behind the saying is everyone needs to see Naples in their lifetime. I lived in Naples for over 3 years and couldn’t agree more, this city is a must see!

The Naples area is one of the most vibrant, naturally beautiful, and historically fascinating places in all of Italy. It stands apart from the rest of the country with a culture all its own. The mentality, crazy driving, and food (Naples is the birthplace of pizza and the Campania province is where buffalo mozzarella is produced), all make Naples unique. The Neapolitan dialect is even recognized as its own language by UNESCO.

The city may have a reputation for not being tourist friendly, but please don’t believe everything you hear! Naples is working on growing its tourism industry and has made great strides in recent years. Besides, with my insider scoop, you will have no problems navigating the city! I will warn you, the Neapolitans may be brash at times, but when you allow yourself to embrace their way of life, you may find yourself charmed by their “napolitanita” (Neapolitanness).

Besides Naples proper, there is much to do and see in the surrounding area. Just north of the city, you will find the Bay of Pozzuoli and the Campi Flegrei zone. Here you can discover ancient Roman and Greek ruins, the active Solfatara volcano, and natural thermal spas. Catch the ferry from the port of Pozzuoli to the islands of Ischia and Procida, both are just as beautiful as Capri (if not more) and much less expensive!

Head south to see the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, victims of the 79 A.D. eruption of Vesuvius. Visit the volcano herself and hike (or ride horseback) to the top for stunning Mediterranean views.  Venture further south to the famous Amalfi Coast, known for its picturesque towns, winding scenic road, and the isle of Capri just off the coast. Featured in countless Hollywood films and a top vacation spot for the rich & famous (from Virginia Woolf to Humphrey Bogart to Gwyneth Paltro), the Amalfi is a must when visiting this southern Italian region.
